New Initiative for Documentary Content for Kids Launched in Finland

The Promotional Centre for Audiovisual Culture in Finland (AVEK) has launched a special project for documentary content for kids in collboration with the Finnish Film Foundation and Finnish broadcaster Yle. The project kids@docs is now open for submissions by Finnish independent production companies. The open call was launched on 3 December 2015 at the annual ‘DocInfo’ event in Helsinki. The submission deadline will be in Spring 2016.

The kids@docs project is especially adapted for online environments and aims to find content that uses a new digital language of documentary storytelling. The project is looking for linear and nonlinear documentary content for kids at age 7-12, to be produced and released on digital online platforms. The first release will be on the Yle digital platforms.

Today children are born digital natives. We go there where kids are, to online platforms’, says film commissioner Outi Rousu of AVEK.

The bigger picture behind the project is that among the high-quality Finnish documentaries there are hardly any documentaries specially made for children. The project looks for content about children and for children. ‘This project falls like rain into the thirsty ground’, says Outi Rousu.

Four productions will be selected. The year of production is 2016 and completed kids@docs projects will be premiered as a part of the DOKKINO programme at DocPoint – Helsinki Documentary Film Festival in January 2017.
