'The Captain’s Heart' receives special award by French broadcaster Histoire at Sunny Side of the Doc
At this year's edition of Sunny Side of the Doc, The Captain’s Heart - produced by EDN member Jesper Jack - received the 'The High Transmission Prize', a special award sponsored by French broadcaster Histoire. "We wish to reward a particularly original, pertinent and crafty history documentary project transmitting knowledge in a captivating way that proves that brains are more important than billions", said a Histoire spokesman in a statement. The prize includes the pre-buy of a history documentary for either €6,000 (60 minutes) or €9,000 (for a 90 minutes title). 'Becoming Cary Grant' celebrates world premiere at Festival de Cannes
The 70th anniversary edition of Festival de Cannes saw the world premiere of Becoming Cary Grant, a documentary focusing on the problematic aspects in the life of one of Hollywood's greatest stars. The film, produced by EDN member Christian Popp and Nick Ware, explores Cary Grant's journey from childhood poverty to global fame, and from darkness out into the light based on extracts from his unpublished autobiography and newly-discovered personal footage. The audience gets to know a different Cary Grant, the man behind the mask of subtle charm and suave sophistication that he wore to hide his insecurities. Marion Guth wins Best Pitch award at Baltic Event Co-Production Market
Producer Marion Guth from production company a_BAHN in Luxembourg won Screen International's Best Pitch Award at the 15th edition of Tallinn’s 'Baltic Event Co-Production Market' for the project (N)Ostalgia directed by Vicki Thornton. Set in a former soviet mining settlement, (N)Ostalgia is a unique hybrid of documentary and fiction told through three interconnected perspectives, provoking the audience to question the relationship between performance, geopolitics and ideology, and observe how the past continues to haunt the post-Soviet present. 'The Road Between Two Worlds' receives Czech Documentary Development Grant
A Czech documentary development grant worth €17,000 has been awarded to The Road Between Two Worlds, a project produced by Kristýna Květová of Cinémotif Films. The Czech State Cinematography Fund announced that nine projects (out of a total of 22 submissions) have been selected to receive development support, noting that the quality of the projects has greatly improved in recent years.
