Daire Collins & Roser Corella Take Home Docs in Thessaloniki Awards
The award winners of Docs in Thessaloniki, the annual EDN pitching forum taking place alongside the Thessaoliniki Documentary Festival, have been announced on Tuesday evening at the closing ceremony of this year's forum edition.
(Moving Mountains Films, Germany)
As one of EDN's flagship pitching forums, Docs in Thessaloniki once again provided a platform for high quality documentary projects to be pitched to international financiers and decision makers in the second largest city of the Greek peninsula. A highlight of the event are the annual awards presented to outstanding documentary projects in development that participated in the pitching forum.
The "ERT Doc on Air Award" was presented to the project Intimate Outsiders produced by Roser Corella and Ana Catal from Moving Mountains Films, Germany. The award includes a €2,000 cash prize and a guaranteed broadcast from the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation ERT. The project tells the story of Third World women, who are increasingly taking up jobs in the homes of the First World. The rushes and materialistic societies of the rich countries leave working parents little time to look after their children or time for the household work. Women migrating from poor countries fill the gap. Intimate Outsiders offers a thought-provoking glimpse at exploitative female migration and the terrible dilemmas facing women who must choose between earning and caring for their own children. The film takes a closer look at the realities underlying the domestic work and care solutions found by Middle Eastern countries, such as Lebanon. These solutions do not address continuing gender inequalities, and all too often focus on the exploitation and even dehumanization of the women who actually provide care for children and do all the domestic work in the houses of middle and upper-class families.
The "MFI Doc Lab Award" went to the project Phoenix by Daire Collins, director and producer from Ireland. The award consists of a scholarship including accommodation at the Meditterranean Film Institute's Doc Lab. The project is a co-production between Ireland, the UK, Romania, Spain and Germany. Phoenix delves deep into the history of Romania’s greatest rock band, who came to prominence in the 1970s under Nicolae Ceausescu’s Communist rule. It is a story of fame, betrayal and life under a megalomaniac dictator. At its essence it is a story of two rivals, set in little-known Communist Romania. It’s the story of rockstars in a changing and confusing world. It begins with the rise of Phoenix during the liberal period of Ceausescu’s rule.
