New documentary festival launching in Budapest
A new documentary festival is established in Budapest, Hungary. Entitled Budapest International Documentary Festival, it will be the first international competition and platform in Hungary for creative national and international documentaries without thematic restriction.
The first edition of BIDF takes place on September 25-28, 2014. The call for entries will go out at the beginning of May and will close in mid-July. Submission to the festival will be open for short, mid length and feature length documentaries. From 2015, the festival will be organized every September, with opening dates after the 20th and the plan is to extend the event with a pitching forum and further additional industry events and programs for the public.
BIDF plan to work in co-operation with European cultural institutions and the best documentary festivals of the world, in order to bring to Hungary the best and most innovative selection of the genre. The aim is to create a strong audience festival and later a strong industry event in the region.
In the description of BIDF the organisers state that they want to:
“Put the emphasis on the cinematic storytelling traditionally associated with fiction films, now an important characteristic of many modern documentaries – regardless of the topic. To highlight its importance, we will give a special award for best cinematography that we will grant in co-operation with internationally acclaimed Hungarian cinematographers”.
The organisers also want to emphasise the documentaries dealing with democracy – the problems and sometimes its violation. Due to the fact that in Hungary and in the region democracy is a relatively new phenomenon, the organisers find this subject very relevant.
