03.03.2017

The 13th EDN Award is presented to Nilotpal Majumdar who receives the award in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the development of the international documentary culture. Through his continuous engagement for DocedgeKolkata, Asian Forum for Documentary, he successfully established and developed an important hub for documentary professionals from all over the world.

Honoured with the EDN Award 2017:
Nilotpal Majumdar, Founder of DocedgeKolkata

As founder of the DocedgeKolkata programme, Nilotpal Majumdar created a unique platform for co-production and training in the Asia-Pacific region including a pitching forum attracting documentary talents, financiers and sales agents from all across the globe. Upon presenting the EDN Award, EDN Director Paul Pauwels stated: "Nilotpal's work has been instrumental in bringing Asian and international documentary professionals together and contributed considerably to the development of the documentary genre across borders. His pioneering efforts also helped to open up a brand new market for both young and established documentary filmmakers in India who would otherwise not have entered the international arena to deliver topics of global relevance. For this important work, we are paying tribute to Nilotpal Majumdar by presenting him the 2017 EDN Award."

With more than twenty years of film teaching experience, Nilotpal Majumdar frequently contributes to a great variety of activities related to the documentary sector, eg. as a jury member of documentary festivals (national and international), as a tutor and expert at key documentary events such as the Documentary Film Programme, IDFA, Sundance Film Festival, Al Jazeera International Documentary Film Festival, ITVS International Fund, ZeLIG School, DMZ Docs Fund and many others.

His track record in directing and producing includes 18 documentaries, fiction and short films including various award-winning titles such as Dhatujhar’96, which earned him the National Awards in 1997 for his directing performance. Nilotpal Majumdar holds a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kolkata University and a Postgraduate Diploma in Cinema with a specilization in editing from the Film & Television Institute in Pune, India.

The official award ceremony took place on 3 March 2017 at the Goethe Institut in Kolkata, India, within the framework of this year's DocedgeKolkata programme.
