'Media and Society' Initiative Presented at MIA Market and Leipzig Networking Days

The recently launched initiative 'Media and Society - European Documentary in a Changing Media Landscape' is a one-year project designed to lay the foundation for a sustainable future of the documentary sector. In order to raise awareness for the initiative, EDN recently presented the objectives and detailed project schedule to documentary professionals at MIA Market and the Leipzig Networking Days.

The EDN-led 'Media and Society' initiative is gaining traction prior to its first major public meeting taking place during IDFA 2017. Over the past weeks, the initiative had been introduced to documentary professionals at MIA Market in Rome, Italy, and the Leipzig Networking Days in Germany. Filmmakers and production companies, film funds, festivals, streaming services, broadcasters and media policy makers - all are invited to contribute to the enterprise. A wide range of online activities will allow the widest number of documentary professionals to participate in the process. In addition, a series of meetings and presentations will take place with the support of, and during, major documentary events in 2017 and 2018 - the IDFA Forum, EFM Docsalon, CPH:DOX, Marché du Film and Sheffield Doc/Fest.

"The initiative aims to provide a blueprint for a sustainable future of the documentary sector and for that to happen we're organizing regular meetings at major festivals to gather input from documentary professionals in order to devise a 'white paper' with recommendations", said EDN Director Paul Pauwels in a statement. "Information is power, and power and transparency is what we’ll need in the years to come, in defence of the documentary genre and it's rightful place on the different platforms. Recent conversations with different stakeholders in the documentary community have confirmed that action is needed. The EDN team is looking forward to meeting with documentary professionals during the upcoming meeting sessions (live and online) that will be organized between now and April 2018".

An international network of partners and advisors is working with EDN on the Media and Society initiative. Besides the industry organisations mentioned above, Bournemouth University, the University of Glasgow, Gent University, Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Aberystwyth University and Oxford Brookes University are already actively involved. New partners will be invited to join the project in the months to come.
