Franz-Grabner-Award Announced at Diagonale Film Festival

06.05.2016

In order to commemorate the work and legacy left behind by ORF journalist Franz Grabner, who passed away last year, the first edition of the Franz-Grabner-Award has been announced at the Diagonale Film Festival in Graz, Austria. The new documentary award honours the impact Grabner had on the documentary sector over the years.

Starting in 2017, the Franz-Grabner-Award will be presented to the best cinematic documentary and the best TV documentary film. The award recognizes Grabner's standards of quality which he applied to his work in the documentary field, such as his humanistic and philanthropic attitude as well as his high professional standards.

The Franz-Grabner-Award will be presented on an annual basis within the framework of the Austrian Diagonale Film Festival. The award aims to support Austrian documentary films for TV and cinema focusing on topics like culture, society, political themes or history. The films do not have to focus speficially on Austria and should rather touch upon global and European issues in a curious, optimistic way.

Apart from a compelling narrative, the awarded films will feature an innovative and creative approach towards the dramaturgical and filmic implementation of the story. Any films with sufficient artistic potential for the international film and television markets, including cross-media projects, may be considered for the award.

Eligible are formats with a minimum length of 30' as well as documentary series. The Franz-Grabner-Award requires filmmakers to apply the highest standards with regard to ethical and moral responsiblity as well as the credibility of their approach.

The award committee will consist of representatives of Austrian public broadcaster ORF, the producer's association AAFP, Film Austria and the founding members of the Franz-Grabner-Award. A specialized jury of five experts will select the winners and the prize of €5000 will be invested in the development of a follow-up project.
