Finnish Film Foundation Supports Ten Documentary Projects With Over €700,000

The Finnish Film Foundation has announced the next slate of projects to be co-funded through the foundation's support schemes. Among the supported titles are ten documentaries, including Tiina Madisson's "Brides of Nepal" and Aleksi Puranen's "Wheels of Freedom", both of which previously participated as projects in EDN forums and workshops (Twelve for the Future, Lisbon Docs).

Tiina Madisson's Brides of Nepal, pitched at Lisbon Docs,
is among the titles to receive production support

With a total amount of €726,000, the Finnish Film Foundation will support ten documentary projects to be produced by Finnish-based production companies or involving Finnish minority co-producers. Among others, the upcoming documentary Brides of Nepal (directed by Tiina Madisson, Icebreaker Productions) receives €110,000 in production support. The project had previously been co-developed and pitched at the EDN pitching forum Lisbon Docs and the EDN co-production workshop Twelve for the Future. Brides of Nepal takes a closer look at the implications of forced marriage at a young age and asks how this affects both the childhood and mental landscape of a young girl who grows up in the midst of violence.

Aleksi Puranen's Wheels of Freedom also took part as a project in a previous edition of Twelve for the Future. Wheels of Freedom tells the story of a handicapped protagonist who, despite being bound to a wheelchair, plans to embark on a journey through Europe in an attempt to overcome his physical disability and experience freedom.

Further supported documentary projects include Shannon Kring's End of the Line: The Women of Standing Rock with Finnish minority co-producer Solar Films - the project focuses on the story of a group of indigenous women in the U.S. willing to risk their lives to stop the Dakota Access oil pipeline construction that desecrated their ancient burial and prayer sites and threatens their land, water, and very existence.
