East Doc Platform Awards Best Documentary Projects

The seventh annual East Doc Platform, or EDP, brought 350 film professionals from around the globe to Prague from March 3rd to March 9th. The EDP is Central and East Europe’s largest "co-production, funding and distribution" doc-film event, and is organized by the Institute of Documentary Film. EDP offers recognition and networking to filmmakers who pitch their projects: the event presents a variety of awards and gives filmmakers a chance to gain valuable input in the early stages of their projects from recognized professionals.

This year almost fifty documentary entries competed for nine awards and cash prizes totaling 35,000 euros. The event’s pitching competition brought the climactic East Doc Forum award for best project to director Marianna Kaat for her Polish-Estonian production The Last Relic. The jury praised the project as the story of "a young person searching for a future in [Russia's] past" for its "strong trailer,… well-written treatment, [and] clear point of departure."

As a new initiative this year, the EDP announced a competition for short documentary projects. The award was given to Blackandwhite (directors: Zoe Eluned Aiano, Anna Benner; producers: Linda Dedkova, Martin Hůlovec). Blackandwhite garnered the $20,000 prize and IF/Then support for multi-platform distribution. The Czech-German production, set during World War II, deals with the complex question of wartime heroism and revenge from a woman’s point of view.

Other prizes included the IDFA Forum Award for Journey to the End of the Night. Team members of the Russian-Estonian project had previously taken part in the pitching forum North Pitch - Below Zero this past January – an event organized by EDN in collaboration with Nordnorsk Filmsenter, Tromsø International Film Festival and Kulturnæringsstiftelsen SNN.
