DocSalon at European Film Market 2018: Meet the Key Players of the Industry


For the tenth time, EFM and EDN are organising the annual documentary industry platform DocSalon during the Berlinale at the European Film Market (EFM). DocSalon, formerly 'Meet the Docs', is a meeting point and networking platform dedicated to everyone with an interest in the documentary genre. All services as well as the SalonTalks series are open to Market Badge holders (priority) as well as accredited Festival visitors. For the programme formats “Meet the Festivals” as well as “High Tea with Experts” it is required to pre-register.

DocSalon is the central meeting point and platform for networking and exchange for documentary professionals or professionals wanting to work with documentary. The DocSalon is based in the Martin-Gropius-Bau and facilitates documentary sellers, buyers, programmers, producers and directors with meeting facilities, match making, networking as well as market information.

In 2018, EDN will continue to organise sessions at the stand such as Meet the Festivals, the new round-table format High Tea with Experts and SalonTalks, taking place daily from 16 - 20 February (click here for a complete list of sessions and speakers). Please note that there is no separate registration procedure for the overall DocSalon initiative as this is an integrated service of the EFM, and all services offered by DocSalon are free of charge for EFM badge holders. For the programme formats “Meet the Festivals” as well as “High Tea with Experts” it is required to pre-register.

The DocSalon services include:

• Networking & meeting place: A dedicated networking and meeting area for documentary professionals
• Individual consultations: EDN experts provide individual consultation on your documentary project
• Booklet incl. a list of all documentaries in the festival programme as well as the DocSalon programme
• Daily meeting sessions: 'Meet the Festivals' and 'High Tea with Experts' Feb 16-20
• Daily SalonTalks: Experts discuss key issues Feb 16-20
• Networking Drinks at the DocSalon

Meet the Festivals

The DocSalon event 'Meet the Festivals' gives direct access to top doc festival programmers and market representatives with the opportunity to book short one-on-one meetings and discuss documentary projects. Confirmed festivals represented at DocSalon include Hot Docs, DOK Leipzig, FIDmarseille, DOK.fest München, IDFA, Visions du Réel, Sundance Film Festival, Sheffield Doc/Fest, Krakow Film Festival, Jihlava IDFF and many others.

High Tea with Experts

The round table sessions "High Tea with Experts", taking place daily from 16 - 20 February, are ideal for networking and gaining in-depth knowledge from leading experts of the documentary industry. Confirmed companies and organizations include Rise & Shine World Sales, Windrose, DOCDAYS, Pinball London, Momento Film, Cinephil, Widehouse, World Cinema Fund, Doc Society and many others.


Participate in five inspiring talks with key industry players on current developments and future challenges of the documentary industry. The topics include an interactive casy study on Docs and VR (in collaboration with Sheffield Doc/Fest), an in-depth session on pan-European funding schemes with Creative Europe and Eurimages (Moderator: Paul Pauwels, EDN), a talk on how to reach audiences (DOK Leipzig, dok.incubator and IFP), a case study on documentary financing (with Joslyn Barnes, Signe Byrge Sørensen, Tobias Jansson, moderated by Dorota Lech, Hot Docs, TIFF) and a session focusing on making local content go global - and how to get it financed (David Rane and Neasa Ní Chianáin, Moderator: Paul Pauwels, EDN).

Media and Society Initiative

As part of the EDN initiative 'Media and Society - Documentary in a Changing Media Landscape', DocSalon will offer three separate sessions focusing on how to create a more sustainable future for the documentary sector. The initiative intends to provide policy-makers with a strategy document that will contribute to a culturally rich and economically sustainable professional environment.
