National Geographic launches new channel entitled People
Starting in early 2014 National Geographic Channels International is launching a new channel with the name Nat Geo People. The new channel will be distributed in 50 countries.
Nat Geo People replaces the current Nat Geo Adventure channel in all territories, where Adventure is currently broadcasted. People will be available in HD and have both linear and non-linear distribution across Europe, Middle East and Asia-Pacific.
According to the channel description from NGCI the new channel will offer “unfiltered, intimate access to the true, amazing and inspiring stories of real people all over the world.” Programming will feature stories of ”notable individuals and fascinating subcultures found across the globe”. Already announced programmes include David Rocco’s Dolce Vita, Food Lover’s Guide To The Planet, Ladyboys, Don’t Tell My Mother and Hook, Line & Sisters.
NGCI’s global content hub team, based in London, will oversee the content and programming strategy for People. Significant input will also come from programming teams in local markets. Hamish Mykura, NGCI’s EVP and head of the global content hub, states: “Nat Geo People will bring viewers emotional and entertaining true stories of real people; think of it as Real TV as opposed to Reality TV. Our focus is on compelling characters who take you into riveting subcultures and on exhilarating adventures”.
