Still from "Metaphor or Sadness Inside Out",
one of the films free to stream on DAFilms

DAFilms continues the so-called Portuguese Harvest that started in November 2015 with a selection of Portuguese films made freely available for streaming on the DAFilms platform.

The initiative takes place in the wake of the upcoming DocsLisboa International Film Festival and intends to provide an overview of Portuguese style documentary and cinematic productions. Please see below for a list of films that can be watched online for free at DAFilms:

Metaphor or Sadness Inside Out

Catarina Vasconcelos | 2013 | Portugal | 31 min

Short Synopsis: A correspondence between a brother and sister in the midst of the anniversary of their mother’s death, causes them to go in a journey to the past to understand the time where their mother lived and how their country, Portugal, was in the 1970’s when a revolution took place. In a blend of a family story with the Portuguese History, this film is a fight against oblivion.

Motu Maeva

Maureen Fazendeiro | 2014 | France, Portugal | 42 min

Short Synopsis: A portrait of Sonja, adventurer of the twentieth century, living on an island that she built by herself: Motu Maeva.

Snakeskin

Daniel Hui | 2014 | Portugal, Singapore | 105 min

Short Synopsis: In 2066, a survivor of an enigmatic cult recounts his country’s traumatic history and the events leading to the rise and fall of the cult. Ghosts from 2014 and before appear as witnesses. Part dream documentary, part city symphony, this film traces the lineage of oppression as inscribed in Singapore’s landscape and collective unconscious.

Looms

Mónica Baptista / 2014 / Portugal / 38 min

Short Synopsis: The construction of the Castelo de Bode Dam began in 1945. By the new reservoir we now meet three women born in the 1940’s, who still carry out one of the most ancient human crafts – weaving. The mysterious and pathetic character of life, the events of the subconscious and the mutations of the environmental landscape intertwine with the loom’s back and forth.

João’s Nightmare

Francisco Botelho | 2014 | Portugal | 22 min

Short Synopsis: João still lives at home with his parents. With absolutely no idea what to do with his life, he leaves the city centre to hang out in the outskirts. The abandoned factory where he spends his days is the lingering echo of a better past. What lies ahead seems worse as João comes face to face with the failure of youth.

Blue Flower

Raul Domingues | 2014 | Portugal | 69 min

Short Synopsis: “Prune me in January / Tie me up in February / Dig me up in March / And you’ll see what I’ll do to you.” With this popular saying, Raul Domingues invites viewers to watch his film Blue Flower.
