Mercury Media Founder Tim Sparke Passes Away
Tim Sparke, founder of UK-based documentary distributor Mercury Media International, passed away on Wednesday last week following a long battle with cancer.
Tim Sparke was Chief Executive of Mercury Media, a traditional factual distribution company, and joiningthedocs.tv, a broadband VOD documentary portal. Many filmmakers in the documentary industry knew Sparke as a relentless proponent of the documentary genre, which he passionately fought for with all ambition and dedication. His distribution company Mercury Media featured a slate of more than 120 titles incl. individual docs and series. The company sold docs to various broadcasters and SVOD services, such as Netflix, always trying to find a place for individual titles despite vanishing slots and decreasing budgets.
According to Realscreen, Sparke discovered in 2011 that he had thyroid cancer that had metastasized to his brain. Over the span of several years, Sparke underwent various surgeries and treatments to combat the disease.
Regarding his passion for the documentary sector, Sparke told the BBC in an interview in 2013: “You don’t go into the documentary distribution business without some kind of passion for life. You have to be motivated to have some kind of higher purpose other than just paying the taxman.”
The passing away of former EDN member Tim Sparke means a great loss, not only for the world of documentary, but most of all for those who were close to him. We would like to offer our sincere condolences to Tim's friends and family.
